If you wanted to hear stories about the days when drovers criss-crossed the country with stock, this was the place to be. Every year at the end of August, drovers from across Australia gather in Camooweal for a reunion that includes exhibitions, music and remembering the days that made them the stuff of legends.

The mayor of the City of Mount Isa, which encompasses Camooweal as well, emphasised that point when she opened the festival the following morning.

I’m a wee bit biased because I was brought up in the outback, in the Northern Territory and Queensland, but I always say that the bush is what made Australia. The bush is the backbone of Australia and I feel very sad for people that live in the city areas that don’t get the opportunity to come out here and see what the outback is and what Australia is made from. More than that, to meet the people. They’ve worked very hard all their lives to create Australia and droving is a big part of Australia. There’s a lot of history here and a lot of interesting people to have a yarn to and to learn what our history is.
